Hospital and its greater region (2km radius) has a population of approximately 3,500 people, it has a thriving secondary school, yet the town itself is in severe decline. It is from this adverse situation that Jacki Hehir and the core organisational group, endeavour to bring the subjects of art, culture and the local environment to the forefront of people’s imagination. Through a process of engagement at a local, national and environmental level, the Hospital Shop Window Festival and its organisers aim to enhance recognition and inclusion of the various different institutes that are already working on the ground in the town of Hospital.
2014 has seen Limerick City celebrate its City of Culture status and for one week in September, we wish to bring that celebration of culture to the Main Street of Hospital by calling on professional artists from all across Ireland to exhibit their works in the shop windows on the main street of the town. Launching the Shop Window Festival on Culture Night on 19th September, the objective is to bring contemporary art, culture and the subject of local environment to the street, utilising the town itself as a living and working exhibition space and allowing free, unlimited access to all.
